After,Poe went to live with his aunt. His aunt’s name was Maria, and her daughter’s name was Clemm. They both lived in Baltimore, Virginia (Poets.org 2017). Edgar Allan Poe was a poet mostly known for his depressing and sad narratives (Poets.org 2017). He was born January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts (Poets.org). Poe’s adoption parents gave him the opportunity for an outstanding educational background, he attended one of the best boarding schools, and also attended Oxford University (Poets.org, 2017). He later flunked out of college because he spent his college money on gambling and expected his adoptive father to pay his debts (Poets.org 2017). Poe’s mother and father died when he was only three years old, they were both well-known professional actors (Poets.org, 2017). The deaths of his parents later caused him to have a traumatic and sad childhood and adulthood, not including the death of his wife Lenore (Poets.org, 2017). He wrote the poem “The Raven” to remind him of that sad moment of the death of his wife (Poets.org,2017). One of Poe’s famous quotes was when he was near death, he said, “Lord, help my poor soul” (Semtner, Christopher P., 2017). In this poem “The Raven” Poe uses alliteration which is a repetition of a constant sound, an example of alliteration is when Poe used in line 26 “Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before”. He also used a rhyme scheme, which has a secondary rhyme on the final the final two syllables, in lines 44 and 46 “wore and shore”. Edgar Allen Poe also used a simile, a simile is a comparison with like or as. The perfect example for a simile in “The Raven” was lines 3-4 when Poe said “Suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping”. A metaphor, which was also used, is a comparison without like or as. An example of a metaphor would be line 123, which he said “ and his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming”. To conclude, Edgar Allan Poe made a substantial impact on the poetic community. Even
