Edgar Allen Poe was a nineteenth century poet that specialized in gothic and romantic styles of writing. When people think of poetry from the early nineteen hundreds Edgar Allen Poe usually comes to mind. Edgar focused on his personal feelings and hardships instead of the common trends that came along with poetry writing during that time. Light Hearted writing was not something in which he was interested in. Becoming a writer during this time period was extremely challenging, and Poe was the first writer to successfully make a career out of his work. Inspiration is still found within Poe’s profound works of poetry today. Poe then decided that he was going to get kicked out of the military academy in which he was attending. The way in which Edgard got kicked out was by skipping mandatory classes and skipping drill practices. He was sent home after a few weeks of him doing this. Edgar claimed that the army did not suit a poor man, (The Editors of The Encyclopedia of Britannica, 2017). As soon as Poe was dismissed from the Army he became a full time poet. This was just about unheard of at the time. Edgar decided that he needed to connect his foster family in which he abandoned. The last time that he talked to his step- father was to get money. John was getting tired of his son just wanting material objects from him. John had already re-married and had made a new life for himself. John had already taken Edgar off of his will. Needless to say Poe did not get any money from his step-father. John Allen ended up dying in March of 1834 as said by Academy of American Poets, (2017) . Poe had written him a letter the year before trying to persuade him one last time to help him out whilst he was struggling to get by. John Allen refused. This one conflict shaped Edgars poems into the gothic style that people know of
