Edgar Allan Poe wrote many captivating stories. He lost the few family members he had one by one and struggled financially for most of his life. He based some of his stories on his wife who was only 13, and won a few awards along the way. Nonetheless, he continued to write despite his losses and struggles. Poes work is known world wide and has impressed many.
Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. His parents, David Poe, Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, were not in the picture for long. At a young age Poes father disappeared without a trace. A little while later his mother became sick and died from tuberculosis and he was introduced into the Allan family. In May 26, 1827, poe enlisted in the army under the name Edgar A. Perry. “In the register enlistment poe described himself as having gray eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, and a height of five feet and eight inches.” (Rafael Tilton, The Importance of Edgar Allan Poe). As time passed poe began to feel out of place, and so he moved to a new position in the army. While transferring to his new position his identity was revealed when he was recognized by a former college mate. This was not bad news surprisingly. After his name was revealed everyone began coming to him with the news that Frances was sick, she had contracted tuberculosis. Poe rushed home to virginia but he was to late.. by the time he reached home Frances had passed away. Poe made peace with Allan but only for a moment. John helped poe enter the military school of west point where he excelled in his studies but showed limited satisfaction in his duties. While in west point john and poes relationship ended as quickly as it began. John had remarried without telling poe. He dedicated his time to his writing and moved to Baltimore with his aunt Clem and cousin Virginia. While in Baltimore poe caught news that john had died and left nothing for him. Poe, struggling with finances again, entered one of his stories in the Baltimore Saturday and won a prize of $50. Afterwards his writing picked up gain while he became close with his cousin. While inspiring his work Virginia and poe got married. Although she was 13, the marriage certificate stated that she was 21. After thei marriage poe got a job as an editor for the Southern Literary Messenger. He reviewed poems and stories from others while sending his work to other authors as well. While editing, reviewing, and writing poe squeezed in a few of his owns writings. Soon he picked up drinking which played a role in him leaving his job. He soon found work with another magazine, Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine, The Broadway journal, and Graham’s Magazine. Despite the fame and recognition he received, poe still struggled financially. From the late 1830s to 1844 poe published even more of his works, one of them also won him a literary prize; in 1845 poe published “The Raven”, his best work
