It is believed that Poe died from either rabies or alcohol. In his earlier days, Poe drank excessive amounts of alcohol. As he grew older, he began to stop. There were no rabies vaccines in that time. Poe had a cat that could've easily scratched him to pass the disease. However, Poe died of rabies because, "the writer was so sensitive to alcohol, even a glass of wine could make him violently ill for days." "While in the hospital, Poe grew confused and belligerent then quieted down and died. This is known as a classic case of rabies" (Dr. R Michael Benitez 188). …show more content…

If Poe refused alcohol then, he was probably never drinking it in the first place. "Poe was given a private room, reportedly in a section reserved for cases involving drunkenness" (Kenneth Silverman 184). I believe Poe was given a private room to not be bothered. It is not known for sure that it was a room for drunkenness. According to Burton Pollin and Robert Bendetto, outside a Baltimore bar is where Poe was found (189).
