Narrative of Fear Edgar Allen Poe and Lord Byron are masterful at using vivid, descriptive language language to develop the element of Gothic literature and instil a sense of fear in the reader. Poe, who wrote the Cask of Amontillado, used sentences to put fear in the reader. He wrote, “Fortunato 's low moaning cry from the depth of the recess,” and, “ The walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead.” These sentences indicate that someone is crying and is in a crypt like structure due to the walls being piled with bones.

The man in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” thought that his great wealth and power could shield him from the inevitability of death. This story takes place in the middle of a city that has just been contaminated with a deadly plague named “The Red Death”. The plague gets its name from the violent death its victim experience before they die; excessive bleeding through the pores.
In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “The Raven,” there are many symbols. For example, Lenore, “nevermore,” and the raven. Firstly, the character Lenore represents his dead wife Virginia. Furthermore, the quote “Nevermore,” which all the raven says, represents him losing his wife and the repeating losses in his life. Additionally, the raven represents death and sorrow, which is typically the theme in his poems and his life.
In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe, many symbols are used to justify the overall purpose and meaning of the story. These symbols include the ebony clock, the seven chambers, the scarlet and black room, and the Red Death itself. Each of these symbols help characterize the Prince and his guests, along with foreshadowing the overall outcome of the story. First of all, the seventh chamber and ebony clock not only provide a sense of eeriness, but reveal the underlying personalities and outcomes of the characters. Poe used foreshadowing and irony to create fear in his stories “Tell-Tale Heart” and “Cask of Amontillado”. Foreshadowing is a literary device that Poe used to spawn fear in his readers. In “Tell-Tale Heart” the narrator, Edgar Allan Poe, attempts to convince us that he has not gone mad, yet he begins to desire the kill of an impaired man over his “pale blue eye”. Throughout the story, Poe’s symbolic nature imbues fearful emotions about the narrator’s true fear of time until death. Poe builds up the fear in the audience by using the narrator’s point of view to describe the horrid scent, dark visuals, and frightening sounds discovered after the narrator’s plunge into the pit. For instance, the narrator described his experience saying “I could no longer doubt the doom prepared for me…the pit, typical of hell and regarded by rumor as the ultima Thule of all [Inquisitors’] punishments.” (288) This ominous pit is epitomized to be the worst of the Inquisitorial agent’s punishments since it incites despair upon the captured.

Resurrection simply defined is to bring someone or something back to life. In both of Poe’s works, Ligeia and Morella, the characters are resurrected for different purposes and in different manners. It could be questioned whether these are genuine resurrections at all or other happenings entirely. At first glance they both seem to be, however, a closer look at the resurrection of Ligeia could be nothing more than a figment of an anguished lovesick imagination.
