Edgar went to live with John and Frances Allan. The Allan's were successful tobacco merchants in Richmond, Virginia. ( biography.com) When Edgar got older he added Allan to his name Making it Edgar Allan Poe. When Edgar finish school he went to the Army for two years. John Allen cut Edgar off from all money when he got kicked out of the army for breaking the rules.(history.com)
