For example, in one line Poe speaks about life being like a fever, which makes sense due to a person being warm (body temperature), and when they die they become cool. This may not be humorous now, but in the era in which Edgar Allan Poe wrote his stories, it was comedic then. There is actually a paradox in the poem in which a person must die in order to conquer the fever; "horrible throbbing" symbolizes as the narrators heartbeat and the explaining of the speaker not wanting to be alive. Due to them not wanting to live their life, the naphthalene could have symbolized them killing themselves. Today, death is looked upon as a horrible thing, in For Annie death is portrayed as a relief. The narrator talks of words that say they have drank water that quenches all thirst; an unattainable woman and the only way to satisfy that thirst is to kill oneself. The poem goes from a negative point of view to a positive one by using transition words such as happiness and beauty. Happiness is implied due to the phrase "his heart is brighter than the stars in the sky and glows with the love of his Annie (bunchofwordz.com).
