Edgar Allen Poe is one of the most well know poet in history. He is most famous for his works of horror and mystery, including The Raven and Annabel Lee. Poe’s story starts on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts when he was born. In his early life, his imaginations and creativity seized interest around the world from his readers. His earned the nickname “Father of the Detective Story” from his distinct writing style. Through his life, the line between fact and fiction has be spewed about since his death (Poe’s Life). Poe never really knew his parents; they were actors and therefore always traveling. His father abandoned them early in his life and when he was only three, his mother passed away. He published Tamerland and Other Poems, his first book, in 1827, and he also joined the army near the same time. After the war, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to live with his aunt, Maria Clemm and her daughter, Virginia. Poe’s cousin Virginia because one of Poe’s main inspirations for his poems, along with his lover. They were married in 1836, she was 13 years old and he 27. After Poe came back to Richmond in 1835, he started work at Southern Literary Messeger, which was the local magazine until he left in 1837. It was soon after that his struggle with alcohol started to take over his life, and contributed to his death. Edgar Allan Poe became a household name in 1845 with the publication of The Raven, it was thought of as the most well known and overall best poem of his career. In 1847, the love of his life, Virginia, passed away. Overwhelmed by despair while he tried to continue his work, he was defeated from his poor health and financial instability. The final days of his life still remain a mystery, on September 27, 1864, he was suppose to be on his way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was later found on the side of the road on October 3, and was take to Washington College Hospital. He died four days later on October 7 and his final words were “Lord, help my poor soul”
