Early Life of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 and died October 7, 1849. Poe was a very well known poet past his time. He wrote when he was being enlisted into the army, and he continued writing after. That was in the time of 1829, when he had published his first book. He published his second collection before he had gone to West Point. Poe lived in many different places while he was growing up, including but not limited to; Boston, Massachusetts , New York City, West Point, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Richmond, Virginia. He had a hard childhood, his father left the family when he was still very young, and his mother passed when he was only 3 years old, and he was separated from his other siblings. He then became what he is known for today as a literary sensation in 1845 with his publication of “The Raven”. People considered it to be a great American literary work, or in other words, one of his best in his career. This piece summed up Poe’s main themes in his writings; death and loss. It wasn’t very long after that his criticism was taking a toll. He was beginning to have problems with other known writers as well. One particularly known as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Poe believed that this man was using forgery in his writings, and not using his own. Poe had continued working in different forms, examining his own methodology, and writing in general, which were explored in several essays, including; "The Philosophy of Composition," "The Poetic Principle" and "The Rationale of Verse". Poe has also made writings of thrills, which he was also known for as a writer, creating suspense, and spine-tingling stories. Some of which are, "The Cask of Amontillado," and poems such as "Ulalume" and "The Bells." “Hear the sledges with the bells— Silver bells!
