Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer/poet. He was famous for his short stories about and poems about horror and mystery (Biography.com). Edgar is, still to this day, veiled in mystery, and “the lines between fact and fiction have been blurred substantially since his death” (Biography.com). Edgar was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts (Poets.org). It is unsure exactly how many poems and short stories Edgar Allan Poe wrote in his lifetime, but the numbers range higher than sixty (Blogspot.com). His first self-published book was “Tamerlane and Other Poems” in 1827 (Biography.com). Many of his works, such as, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” became literary classics (Biography.com). …show more content…

In addition to being separated from his brother and sister, he was raised as a foster child in the home of John Allan, a tobacco exporter from Richmond, Virginia (Biography.com). John sent Edgar to “the best” boarding school, where he excelled academically (Poets.org). He later went to the University of Virginia, but after less than one year of school, he was forced to leave because John Allan refused to pay Poe’s gambling debts (Poets.org). After that, Edgar moved to Boston, as his relationship with John Allan deteriorated (Poets.org). When he moved, he decided to enlist into the United States Army, and it was there that he recorded his first collection of poems (Poets.org). However, he had some close and personal inspirations such as his wife, his aunt and his mother (Oswego.org). One of his extremely famous poems, “Annabel Lee” was written, inspired by his wife, whom was his cousin, after she died (Biography.com). His wife just happened to be his aunt’s daughter, so naturally his relationship with his aunt proximated (Oswego.org). His aunt was the only family member Edgar became close to after his parents’ deaths (Oswego.org). She treated him as if he was her own child, she became the new mother-figure Edgar looked up to (Oswego.org). He married Virginia, his cousin, when she was only thirteen years old (Biography.com). However, Virginia became sick with tuberculosis and died only eleven years after marriage (Biography.com). She was twenty-four when she died, the same age Edgar’s mom and brother died (Biography.com).
