On January 19, 1809, Edgar Allan Poe was born to Elizabeth Poe and David Poe Jr. in Richmond Virginia. When Poe was just three, his father left his family and his mother died of tuberculosis. This caused him to be separated from his brother and sister, and instead live with John and Frances Allan. Frances and Edgar easily formed a bond unlike him and John. By the time Edgar was 13, he was an excellent poet, though it was discouraged by John, who insisted on him continuing their family business of being a tobacco merchant.
