Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was a man everyone knew very well. He stared movies, filmed movie’s and wrote books. When people think of Edgar Allen Poe they think dark, mistry, terrifying writing. Edgar states “I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat.” (poemmuseum). He wanted his style of writing like no others. He knew he had problems and he was quite okay with it. He once said “I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it” (poemmuseum). This only lead him to believe his writing would only get better in time. The name allen came later in poe’s life when he was adopted. He was born on January 19th 1809 to a Elizabeth Arnold Poe and a David Poe Jr. In December 1811 Elizabeth died from tuberculosis.Elizabeth, was buried in the churchyard of St. John's Episcopal Church. St. John's is the oldest church in Richmond and is famous as the site of Patrick Henry's rousing "liberty or death" oration shortly before the Revolutionary War. His oldest brother was Henry Poe ,and his infant sister was Rosalie Poe. They were split up. Henry lived with the paternal grandparents. Rosalie was adopted by a family. And Edgar was adopted by John and Frances Allan, a Richmond couple that couldn't have children of their own. As a child Edgar was poor with his birth parents. Edgar attended University of Virginia.
