Rough Draft Poe Essay Perhaps one of the most captivating genres of media that exists within the social world is the one of horror. Just one of the many brilliant writers who were able to produce literary works with the incorporation of horror was Edgar Allen Poe. Poe was a troubled writer who had faced many tragedies throughout his lifetime, and his works today are viewed as masterpieces partly due to their horror elements, as well as influences to modern literature. “Humiliated by his poverty and furious with Allan (Poe’s foster father) for not providing enough funds in the first place” In this quote, it is depicted as to how Poe’s foster father, John Allan had disrespected Poe and intentionally did not provide him with not enough money for him to pay his debts, thus grounding him to penury. John Allan’s treatment angered Poe, and created an image of disgust towards men for him. “While Poe was in Baltimore, Allan died, leaving Poe out of his will, which did, however, provide for an illegitimate child Allan had never seen.” This event provides insight to just how cruel Poe’s foster father had been, and how he worked to deliberately spite Poe. Since Poe had previously stated that women were angelic figures, the increasing situations he was being exposed to by men such as John Allen only created a larger break between his views on females and males. “Poe soon developed a reputation as a fearless critic who not only attacked an author’s work but also insulted the author and the northern literary establishment.
