Allen poe was an alcoholic who was obsessed with wine. Unfortunately no one was aware that Poe was diagnosed with rabies which caused his ridiculous behavior. Poe’s alcoholism was no secret. He would would not wear appropriate outfits based on what the weather was like. Also whenever he would drink his behavior would change.
American author Edgar Allen Poe illustrates how an individual’s internal chaos and anxiety can drive him insane. It is emotional narrative using pathos where Poe tells a dark murderous story through vivid characters, a puzzling plot and a setting that I found unique. First, the portrayal of the characters plays a fundamental role in the creation of the plot, without strong characters, the ideas might appear simple. Poe creates vivid characters which effectively assist the construction of the plot and ideas.
The use of figurative language by authors elevates their works, especially those of fiction, into an entirely different realm in which the reader becomes immersed in both the imagery and descriptions of the text. Of course, there are many ways in which writers can use figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and hyperboles to create an image for the reader or emphasize a point they are trying to make. Authors are also able to utilize figurative language beyond decorating their writing but to also add character development, communicate information about the text, and amplify suspense. Poe shows how the fears and obsessions of the narrators in his tales either lead to their inevitable death, or their miraculous survival. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his texts, such as symbols, ironies, and figurative language, to show the strange and distorted ways of the characters, and the repercussion of their fears and obsessions. Being the vast genre that it is, fiction presents writers with the opportunity to utilize literary devices in their pieces. These devices help in communicating the message of the author’s work. Several fictional texts use common literary devices such as metaphors, similes, symbols, and imagery. These devices allow for writers to personally involve readers with the author’s message.
The Rez Sisters by Tomson Highway gives an authentic glimpse into life on the reserve. The glimpse Highway presents however, is not what one would expect. An audience member seeing a play set on a reserve would expect a tragic story about the social and economic issues prevailing in Indigenous communities. While reading Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, the two terms that I believe would fit best is conflict (person vs. self) and setting. Throughout his whole story, he describes the setting in a very thorough way that makes you visualize it, ‘upon the bleak walls—upon the vacant eye-like windows—upon a few rank sedges—upon a few white trunks of decayed trees’ (Poe, 1839).
