Edgar Allan Poe Paper Edgar Allan Poe had a difficult life Poe’s mother died of tuberculosis when he was just two years old. Poe went to live with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Allan, who were rich. John Allan didn’t really like Poe and treated him unfairly. Poe’s foster mother died when he was 18 years old from tuberculosis. After she died Poe moved in with his aunt and cousin. Poe married his cousin Virginia when he was 27 and she was 13. Soon after that Virginia died of tuberculosis. Poe went into a deep depression and wrote stories about his wife. The mood that is set in all four writings is a negative mood. In Poe’s story “The Masque of the Red Death” there is a negative mood. For example, “there was a sharp cry - and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the stable carpet. Upon which, instantly after words fell prostrate in death the prince Prospero.” In the story ‘’ The Fall of the House of Usher” the mood is negative. For example, “Inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death- agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse.” The mood is negative because Roderick thought that his sister Madeline was dead so he got one of his old friends “the narrator” to come help burry her. When they buried her they didn't know that she was still alive, but Madeline came back out. When she came back out and Roderick saw her they both instantly died. In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” there is a negative mood. For example,” A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat off the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back.” The mood for this story is negative because in the story Montresor has a foe that has insulted in a way that is not told in the story. In “The Masque of the Red Death” there is fear. There is fear because everyone is afraid of the red death so Prince Prospero takes some people to stay away from the red death. For example, “presence a thousand hale and light hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys.” In the story there is also conflict. There is conflict when because the red death showed up at the party and Prince Prospero tried to chase it to kill it but it ended up killing him instead. For example, “there was a sharp cry - and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the stable carpet.
