Edgar Allen Poe was well known for his dark and very visual writing style. In the short story “Masque of the Red Death” Poe tells how the father clock represents time in our lives, and that the same way time does not stop for anyone neither will life. Poe uses seven rooms to represent the stages of life throughout an individual's’ life span. Through his use of symbolism and allegory, Poe’s short story shows that death is unavoidable, no matter who you are or how much money you have.

A lot of his work may be misunderstood, but after it becomes clear the reader can see the lesson behind his work. At first when reading “Masque of The Red Death,” it may seem as if it’s like any other ordinary story. This was everything but a regular tale when looking into the details of the story certain aspects appear rather confusing. For example the fact that the prince had one-thousand friends? Or how all seven rooms in the castle are different colors? This poem is a representation of life and death. During the time of Poe writing this story, he was in a very dark place in his life. His life was full of death and lost. He resulted in gambling and Alcohol which he soon became addicted to. He was not able to keep a stable job nor stay in the same place for too long. He lived a majority of his life moving from place to place, job to job. The one thing that never changed about Poe is his will and motivation to write.
