"The Raven" begins in December at midnight, with an unnamed narrator who sits reading an old book “nearly napping” with means to forget the death of his love, Lenore. “Suddenly there came a tapping” at his chamber door which reveals nothing. As he turns back into the chamber, his soul within him "burning". Soon again a tapping, “somewhat louder than before” was heard at his window. When he goes to explore the source of the sound, a raven steps into his chamber. As if unaware of the narrator standing near, the raven perches on a bust of Pallas (Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom). Amused by the raven's serious disposition, the man commands that the bird tell him its name. The raven's one and only answer is "Nevermore". The narrator is astonished
