Sir Edmund Hillary was a renowned person around the world because he was the first conqueror of Mount Everest. Sir Edmund Percival Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. Sir Edmund Hillary also founded the Himalayan Trust in the 1960’s which built schools, hospitals and health clinics which assisted the Nepalese people after his ascent of Mount Everest. Hillary later participated in expeditions to the South Pole and was among the first to reach the top of Mount Herschel. Edmund’s life in this essay will be explored in further detail.

Edmund was apart of the 1955–58 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition attempting to reach the Geographical South Pole. The last expedition in the Antarctic Region was led by Dr Vivian Fuchs. This expedition was the first of it’s kind as it is the only known completed overland crossing of Antarctica, through the South Pole. This journey was sponsored by countries of the Commonwealth and the U.S.A. Preparations began in London in 1955. During the summer of 1955-1956, Dr Fuchs sailed from London to Antarctica with the intentions of establishing Shackleton Base near Vahsel Bay on the Weddell Sea. This is where the Antarctic expedition would begin. In 1956 Vuchs left back for London, leaving eight men behind to survive in tents and packages as shelter over the winter at Shackleton. During the summer of 1956-1957 Fuchs returned with extra supplies. Fuchs and a team of twelve men set off to do scientific research with six vehicles during the winter. Edmund Hillary and his crew left off to build a base now called “Scott’s Base” in 1957. This was to be Fuchs last destination. Hillary and his three men were responsible for finding a route and building a line of supply depots up the Skelton Glacier and across the Polar Plateau on towards the South Pole, This was for Fuchs and his team across the expedition. The Himalayan Trust is an international non-profit humanitarian organization first established in the 1960s by Sir Edmund Hillary. The Himalayan Trust strive to improve the health, education and general wellbeing of people living in the Everest District. In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary was in the Everest Region leading an expedition studying high altitude physiology. At a village one night he asked a Sherpa what would he like for his children and the Sherpa people. The Sherpa asked for a school in his village of Khumjung. By 1961 the first school was built in the Everest region of Nepal. The Himalayan Trust operates from New Zealand. It maintains a small staff, preferring to work through partnerships with local organisations in Nepal. Recently, a massive earthquake occurred in Nepal and 25% of the building built by the Trust was destroyed. The Trust now continues to build and rebuild schools, health clinics and water treatment facilities. The Himalayan Trust is a major project around the world and was led by Edmund until his death in 2008. The charity and its new president continue to support and rebuild with the Nepalese people. They also restore the basic human rights to the people of the Everest
