As educators we want the best for our students, from taking courses in college and reading this module, The Whole Child, it has summed up pretty well all the reasons why I want to become a teacher and all the goals I have for myself as well as for my future students. In ech 328 I feel we learned a lot about the theorists and their theories, this first introduced us into detail about the importance of educating the whole child. We saw in class examples of what a child can be living with and how much they can bring their outside lives into the classroom (i.e. prior experiences, home issues, thoughts, feelings, and their specific level of development). As talked about in Abraham Maslow’s, an American psychologist, Hierarchy of Needs people need to meet the needs of the lower levels before they can truly receive the next level on the pyramid. So for our students to become life long learners, we teachers need to make sure all needs are met so our students can succeed. This is meeting the biological and physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, and esteem needs before getting to where we want them to be, self-actualization needs where they realize their personal potential, self-fulfillment, seek personal growth and peak experiences by first making sure they can by providing a risk free, engaging, nurturing, and child-centered environment when they enter the classroom. When we focus on not only the student but also the child we focus on their social/emotional, physical, language and cognitive needs and development. They were the one who had faith in me to be the best person and student I could be and became a reason why I wanted to continue my education to become an educator as well. We may have students who have families who can provide for them and help them meet every need the child may have, we may have students whose families can give them some, and we may have students who cannot meet any needs outside of the classroom and as teachers we need to make sure all the children in our class are put on an even playing field by helping them all receive their needs and this means giving students more than just lessons at a desk. As teachers we have relationships with not only with the child but also with their families to ensure the child is progressing as a student and person where we want them to be. Teachers and the student’s families are partners who want the best for the child, as teachers we need to build a relationship with their family because we all play an important role in the child’s
