At least I have friends from many parts of Indonesia.” This was what my friend said to me when he told me a story about his classmate who came from another part of Indonesia. He told me that his friend from NTT would bring him a traditional bag after the holiday. He was not the only one who felt thankful because of having friends from other part of Indonesia. Another friend said that when he was a kid, he never expected himself to have friends from Kalimantan. However, he now had them. He said that it might not happen if he did not continue his study.

By creating and implementing that new subject, he hoped that Indonesian would learn the value of appreciating diversity. As we know, Indonesia has 300 ethnics or 1340 tribes. Those diversities can be viewed as a potential and threat. If education can give Indonesia appropriate knowledge and implement positive values such as appreciation, honoring, and other esthetical values, we can guarantee that education in Indonesia will be successful. Moreover, what education needs to produce is not smart people but humanistic people. Therefore, we can say that it is impossible to separate education from culture.
Since education has many advantageous for our people, it seems clear that education is indeed a powerful instrument to unite the cultural diversities in our nation. Furthermore, education and cultures also must not be separated at all because the education transfers and implements values from the culture while the culture itself is being shaped by educational process.
