What does education reveal about a self? Education reveals a self’s value. In the presence of society, our conscience is absent and our value is led astray. We conform with society’s values because they are the only values we know. However, as Huck shows in The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn; conforming with society’s value does not mean we agree with it. Through education, we are able to discover our relationship with the ideas that are either widely accepted or rejected. Through experience, “You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t”(D. Wallace). However, through unconsciousness, we will live a life absent of both conscience and choice. Well, by having conscience with both of them, human possibility is limitless. But, why is there so many possibility with conscience? Vincent answer this as he states “Education allows you to see other people’s point of view.” By seeing other perspectives, our perception widens. Wider perception leads to more choices. This is why I believe Huckleberry Finn is masterpiece. It opens up a completely different perspective. As Kafka states “A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.” Twain does just that. John. H Wallace, however begs to differ. Wallace believes that Huckleberry Finn is the most “racist trash ever written”. It is because of his unconsciousness and attitude towards racism that disables him from seeing the true meaning of Huckleberry Finn. His education will eventually hit a wall as he will miss out the many lessons in life because he refuses to come in term with racism. Both Edmundson and Emerson disagree with John H. Wallace as Edmundson claims “Emerson understands education as a process of enlargement, in which we move from the center of our being, off into progressively more expansive ways of life” . They will never hit a wall. Emerson and Edmundson’s education is one of a black hole that engulfs all types of learning. Their education will swallow the wall as they come in terms with the past.
