The Civil War was a very brutal war that left hundreds of thousands dead. The Missouri Compromise started this war by placing a boundary that did not allow future slaves North of Missouri’s southern border. In 1859, John Brown, an abolitionist, tried to start a slave uprising which created tension between the South and the North. Also in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, which frustrated others because he was an abolitionist. An abolitionist is a person who doesn’t believe in slavery.

The Union’s approach to ending the Civil War and restoring the country was ultimately quite bold. Along with this, the Union handled restoration, mainly involving the issue of slavery, step by step until stability could exist again. The Union's main concerns were preventing the Confederacy from gaining any political power, aid from abroad, or strong military strength. By displaying complete power and determination over these issues, the ability to put an end to the rebellion would be much easier.
James Polk was elected in 1845 and had an expansionist viewpoint. He accomplished all of his presidential campaign goals which included gaining Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, most of New Mexico, and Arizona including a few more territories on the southern border, therefore, expanding America's territories. In addition, Polk began a period of Manifest Destiny. This was a phrase used to describe America’s goal to grow from “sea to shining sea”. Also, the Mexican-American War in 1846 acquired new lands for America in the southwest from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The idea of classroom causing problems for America’s society is elaborated when President Johnson explains that many children in America don’t have enough money to afford school. “There your children’s lives will be shaped. Our society will not be great until every young mind is set free to scan the farthest reaches of thought and imagination.” In order for a society to be great, education is the foundation; schools are where child learn about their world, and what it is they will do in the future to earn money to live a good life. And to better prove his idea Johnson states, “Each year more than 100,000 high school graduates, with proved ability, do not enter college because they cannot afford it,” then questions what will happen in years when time has become elapsed to conclude any efforts are needed to come into play for there to be a Great Society.
Once upon a time our country of freedom, our United States, was once a country very un-united. From the year 1820 to 1861, important events in history took place that triggered disunion of the United States and start of the Civil War. Some decades only consist of one key event while other decades consist of a few. With the disunion separating the North and the South, each side had different opinions on why they were fighting a war, either because they were pro slavery or anti-slavery. All of the following events are significant because they added fuel to the fire, instigating the Civil War.
Other than having more soldiers and more guns, the Union had a different approach to fighting this war. They had strategy’s like gaining higher ground such as hills like Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge, Culp’s Hill, Little Round Top, and Big Round Top. This gives the Union yet another advantage over the Confederates. It not only allows them to cover more land, but also gives more protection against an attack. The Confederates soon lose most if not all information on where the Union is going or what their next moves are going to be, which is a huge disadvantage for them.
