My teaching philosophy as evolved over many years of experience. My beliefs regarding teaching and learning include student engagement, a strong foundation on building community and life long learning and student leadership. To achieve this I use a variety of strategies based on essential educational principles including learning theory, lesson planning and assessment and diversity issues. When planning for lessons I take all of these strategies into consideration. The instructional approach varies lesson to lesson. I use direct instruction, inquiry based and cooperative learning in all my planning. Students engage by using turn and talk, prior knowledge and collaboration to facilitate the learning. I use a variety of types such as: one on one, rubrics, checklist, pretest and posttest to show growth, small groups as well as traditional test. All students need the opportunity to show what he or she knows which in return will help them feel successful in their educational journey. Building a community classroom with a diverse culture group is essential for helping establish respect for differences and perspectives. I include parents, guardians, staff, students and the surrounding community to facilitate learning. With this collective effort I have witnessed our classrooms turned into a professional learning environment. As a teacher these principles have become rooted in my teaching practice. I have shared my passion for teaching and learning and using these principals with excitement and empathy to connect with learners. In the future as I shift on completing my Principal Certificate I look forward to taking all that I have learned as a teacher to become an effective leader. As a teacher leader I have had the opportunity to serve on many committees such as, math, science, strategic planning, team leader and standard based report cards. Administration has many challenges and I know that you need to wear many different hats. I feel that I have the experience to balance managing staff, bridging school and community and strategic planning for the future.
