Throughout my years of school, I have experienced a multitude of teaching styles and classroom atmospheres. While I don’t plan to become a teacher myself, I still value education and recognize the importance of creating safe and effective classroom environments. While there are many different ways to accomplish this, I believe there are certain values that need to be focused on in order to achieve it to the highest degree. Education should value independence, self-esteem, emotional needs, intellect, and more; however, the best way to educate is to ensure basic needs are met and foster the potential of students. In reference to Maslow’s humanistic theory of learning, an article states: “...the student is the authority on how they learn, and that all of their needs should be met in order for them to learn well.” (Western Governors University, 2020). A student that is hungry, sick, depressed, anxious, or distracted will not learn to their best ability. It is the teacher’s role to recognize when a student is not performing to their full potential and to provide opportunities to fix their concerns. Another responsibility of the teacher is to foster connections between themselves and students. An important duty for students is self-evaluation. “Humanistic learning theory emphasizes the freedom and autonomy of learners.” (Mukherji, 2022). Students should be given the freedom to make decisions for themselves and their education and they must evaluate their personal needs and wants in order for them to be successful in the classroom. There is an array of different learning styles and personal preferences that encourage educational growth in each student. In order for learners to make use of those preferences, they must voice them to their teachers. For educational experiences to be successful for everyone, communication between teacher and student is vital. “Good classroom communication can improve behavior and attitude, catch social problems within school before they begin, and act as a foundation for social and emotional learning.” (Rise Vision, 2021). When a student discusses what they are personally lacking in the classroom with their teacher, more opportunities will be given to the student to cater to their needs.
