I believe that all students have the right to a great education and it is the responsibility of the teacher, parents and students to make sure that it happens. This is best accomplished when students feel that they are safe and their ideas are valued. It is my goal to create an environment where each student feels capable of expressing their thoughts and feelings without judgement. I also want to nurture the growth of new perspectives and outlooks. To accomplish these goals a group effort is needed, with each person taking responsibility for their portion of the work. The app Remind will be used to communicate with both students and parents about important due dates for assignments and tests. I will gladly send an e-mail to any parent or student that does not have access to the app if they request it. If needed a face to face meeting will be used to discuss any questions or concerns that parents, students or I feel need to be addressed. My first action will be to try to just look at them or come near them so that they put it away on their own. If they have it out again or if they are a repeat offender who has it out every day than I will take the phone until the end of the period then give it back to them. If cell phone usage continues to be an issue I will have a one on one discussion with the student and the two of us will lay out a plan of action for any further offenses. Possible consequences would be detention or loss of the phone for the whole day (depending on the school policy). Another issue that I will have to deal with is side bar conversations. This will be addressed by getting closer to the students exhibiting the behavior. If that doesn’t stop the behavior then I will make a joke about side bar conversations and how “Ain’t no one got time for that,” referencing the meme poster that I will have posted on the wall. If the side bar conversations continue I will remind students that not having assigned seats is a privilege and that I will have to change that if we keep having distractions that keep us from being able to complete work.
