Educational Philosophy Statement

As a future educator I believe it is important to be working towards building your students’ principles and character along the lines of Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development. As a teacher, it is my goal is to have my students grasp and advance through all five stages of development. Children need to learn be accountable for their actions and choices at a very young age and I believe it is my job as an educator to help guide them to understand why their actions have punishments and how should they avoid this. I believe good behaviors and actions should be rewarded, but it is important to avoid an attachment for rewards. To move them to moral understanding and obedience, it is important to have the students learn from each other while also building a teacher-student relationship. This builds self-esteem and a sense of belonging that will lead into law and order. Here students choose their behaviors and develop classroom rules, they understand what they mean and the reasoning behind them. It is important in a child’s development to learn how to interact, function, and respect those of different backgrounds. One of my responsibilities as an educator is to help students learn how to get along with others and be productive members in their community. Opening their eyes to a world of unique differences will allow them to thrive in today’s society. As a future teacher the most important aspect of being diversely responsible is to really get to know my students. Comprehending and embracing their differences will not only develop and strengthen the teacher-to-student relationship, but also have a positive effect on the student-to-student
