Kennedy Kern 8th Grade 12/14/17 Grieg Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer in the Romantic Era. He was born in Bergen, Norway on June 15, 1843. He died in Bergen, Norway on September 4, 1907.(Britannica) His most well known pieces are Peer Gynt, In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Holberg Suite. Grieg is most famous for playing the piano. He had many compositions for the piano but he also had some orchestra compositions. At the age of fifteen he was sent to Leipzig conservatory to improve his musical talent(famouspeople). While he was at the conservatory he inquired a life threatening lung disease. Five years later, he traveled to Italy to work on his compositions. The next year a close friend died and he composed a funeral march undetected it to him.In 1880 he became music director for Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra till 1882. He influenced many composers who came after him. He also influenced the era and type of music of his time. He was a very powerful composer. Most of his pieces had a full loud and powerful sound. Which perfectly describes the full powerful man that he was. In conclusion, Grieg was a very influential composer who fought through a lot just to do what he loved. He fought through a lung disease, the death of a close friend, and the death of his own daughter just to compose music and make people happy. All in all, he just wanted to compose music that could and did and will last a lifetime. I listened to “In The Hall Of The Mountain King”. It is in B Minor. It's starts off at a mezzo forte and crescendos to a forte. The tempo also starts to speed up. There is a pizzicato melody. It is performed by a full orchestra. There is a lot of flute and percussion. It speeds up quite a bit and crescendos a lot. It is a very loud and proud song. At the end the sound drops to a piano and then crescendos quickly backup to a
