According to Aristotle, in order for a drama to be successful, it must be composed of six literary elements. More specifically, it has to have characters, language, plot, ideas, spectacles, and possibly music. These components are extremely important for us to truly be able to understand drama as a form. But, there are always certain works that are more successful than others. For example, Othello’s elements are much more developed as a whole compared to Edward III, although they are both written by William Shakespeare. Based purely on this, and not on likeability, Othello is superior in structure to Edward III pertaining to Aristotle’s definition. Iago, in his attempt to get Cassio drunk, sang multiple drinking songs to put him in the mood to drink more and more (Act 2, Scene III, 69-73). He wanted to manipulate Cassio, and the songs were successful in accelerating that plan. Later, Cassio brings musicians to Othello’s home so that he can try to redeem himself. He wants to be reinstated as his lieutenant, and he figured putting Othello in a good mood would benefit him (Act 3, Scene I). Desdemona also sings the Willow Song while she gets ready to go to bed. The complications are clear: King John should not be king, the Countess is too distracting for King Edward, and the war that is looming will not easily be won. The climax of the play is Prince Edward’s celebrated return after he wins the largest battle yet. This moment ensures his father will get the rights to the crown.
