Edward Jenner was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire on May 17, 1749. Gloucester is in the western part of England. Edward was an orphan at the age of five and lived with his older brother. He went to school in Wolten-Under-Edge and Cirencester as a kid. Edward was a very smart kid. He started to get interested in science and nature. At the age of nine, he started working as a surgeon’s apprentice. He was an apprentice for Dr. Daniel Ludlow for seven years then went to London, England to study science and nature. When Edward was an apprentice, he over heard a girl say that she couldn’t get the dreaded smallpox because she already had a disease called Cowpox. Cowpox happens in a cow’s udders but when humans come in contact with the cow, that person can also get this horrendous disease. Besides cowpox, smallpox is the most annoying disease. Smallpox back then was considered a deadly disease that was very common. Smallpox is a viral disease that gives you a fever and leaves scars all over. Edward got inspired when that girl said that, so he started researching this human pathogenic disease. The more he researched, the more he got inspired. Edward noticed that a lady, Jan Ingenhaus, who lived in England came up with an idea. She would cut your patients arm and put the cowpox in the wound and supposable the patient wouldn’t react as badly as it normally does. Jenner started with small animals like cows. When he cured smallpox in humans he decided to start working on humans. He had an experiment with an eight-year-old boy named James. Edward cut James’s arm and put cowpox puss inside the wound. James received normal reactions but after several days he was in excellent health. After Jenner made sure that James was okay he did the same thing but with the Smallpox puss.
