Edward peirce is a brilliant cracksman. That means he is an expert thief. He plans to to steal a large sum of gold and coins from a London shipment to the Crimean war front. He spends more than a year preparing for this robbery, and uses his money and social knowledge to gain information on the location of the four keys needed to open the safes. The first key he goes for is the key in possession of Edgar Trent. He finds the location of this key by causing Trent’s ugly daughter to believe she is in love with him. Once she mentions that her father often will often go down to the wine cellar alone looking worried and will come up with nothing, Pierce decided to try to get into his house. Locked up in the train station office. There is a guard present 24/7. There is a square foot window in the back of the train station office. Pierce sees this as his only means of getting in. He first muggs a cop, and takes his uniform. Then he has a young boy take Miriam’s handbag and run into the train station trying to evade Barlow who is dressed as a cop. The young boy is cornered and begins to bang on the glass window until it breaks. Soon after, Barlow apprehends him, and takes him away. Pierce knows that no one currently in his group can fit through the window, so he decides to hire the best “snakesman” to crawl through. This snakesman goes by Clean Willy, and he is being held in the so called unescapable Newgate Prison. While people are distracted by a public hanging, Pierce assists willy in escaping. When willy heals from his wounds acquired while escaping, Pierce has him crawl through the window. They had been watching the guard, and he went on a bathroom break at the same time every night for almost exactly one minute. Willy unlocked the doors on entry, and Agar has one minute to run in, make the wax impressions, and run out. He does it with little time to spare, but manages to pull it off. Willy climbs back through the window. Now that Pierce has all four keys, he bribes the guard for the car that the gold is in.
