“The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas is a gritty, in-your-face novel that perfectly describes what it’s like to be in the middle of a social justice movement. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter’s life is flipped upside down when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil by a cop. She suddenly finds herself living a double life, where at home she advocates for the Black Lives Matter movement and at school, she fights to be seen as normal despite being one of the only black students in a mostly-white school. A major theme throughout the book is identity. Starr finds herself balanced between two worlds, privilege and poverty, unable to make the leap into either one.
Unfortunately, many Creoles were stuck in between staying loyal to Spain or joining the revolution(Doc A). In some cases, like Father Hidalgo’s, only one Creole was needed to start an uproar. Father Hidalgo led six hundred natives, blacks, and slaves in a revolt (Doc E). Father Hidalgo used the injustices towards the lower classes to fuel the rebellion and help him gain power, something many Creoles wanted. By displaying their frustration with unjust Spanish treatment and leading the rebellion, the Creoles gained power.
PLOT SUMMARY AND THEME OF THE NOVEL: Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan is the story of how Magnus Chase, a son of the Norse God Frey, meets his untimely demise at the hands of the fire giant Surt after learning of his heritage. After being revived in the Norse afterlife, Valhalla, Magnus is taken back to the world of the living to fulfil his destiny as being the harbinger of the Wolf. Along the way Magnus meets many mythical creatures including: a talking goat, a deaf elf, and a tall dwarf. In the end Magnus and his new found friends rebind the Wolf Fenris and defeat the fire giant Surt. The Theme of Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer is that when things are at their worst it can always get better.
Kindred, by Octavia Butler, depicts the real life horrors of slavery in comparison to a time after the Civil War and abolishment of slavery. Similarly, A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter M. Miller. Jr., describes the aftermath of a nuclear war and how the different social classes respond to the reformation of society. Each social class has differing opinions on how to recover from the war, leading to the separation and inequity of the social classes. Both novels portray examples of discrimination and prejudice based on cultural differences, something that can still be seen in present-day society. These inequalities are only further supported by the different social classes presented in the novels.
The Rebellious Daughter: Analyzing the Theme of Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds” The story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan explores the deep familial emotions between a mother and her daughter. Jing-Mei’s mother had left China to come to America after losing her family, and had been raising Jing-Mei in America with her second husband. Despite her mother’s grand hopes for Jing-Mei to become successful in America by becoming a child prodigy, Jing-Mei did not share the same opinions.

It’s the backbone behind any classic horror film where the babysitter keeps getting unknown phone calls about checking the children and she asks the police to trace the call only to get a call back saying it's coming from upstairs.
“The Veldt”, by Ray Bradbury, is a short story that contains a series of events where the children, Wendy and Peter, are constantly being spoiled with the use of technology. Their parents, George and Lydia, bought a technology filled house, which contains devices that do almost everything for them, including a nursery for the children. The nursery’s walls transform and display different environments, of which reflect one’s thoughts. The children, however, are caught using violent content inside the nursery so their parents threaten to take away all technology, including the nursery. The children become upset, throw temper tantrums, and end up locking their parents in the nursery, left there to die with hungry lions.
The short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan explains a mother and daughter relationship that has many differences within a conflict in the story. The narrator demonstrates that the mother and the daughter do not agree with the same aspect on life. Since the mother wants her daughter to be perfect, the daughter refuses to make her mother’s wishes come true. Her mother wanted the narrator to become the perfect traditional daughter, but the narrator’s differences triggered with her mother. An indication from the story is, “Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be, I could only be me” (137).
All the three works of group three extend the novelties of group two. “Ecco mormorar” and “S’andasse Amor” adventure the florid writing in them, while “Memtr’io mirava” shares its move to distant harmonic areas. However, there are two traits that are very difficult to define that unite these madrigals; one is an ability to bring to music the syntactic and meaning organization of text and a structural coherence of a rigor which is unknown to Monteverdi’s earlier works. The New and Lonesome Normal Joyce Oates’s “Hi Howya Doin” depicts the violence that has captured and encapsulated today’s culture. The un-deemed murder of an innocent jogger in the end of this story validates and justifies the fear that so many individuals feel. In Oates’s short story, “Hi Howya Doin”, the protagonist is depicted as a “Good-looking husky guy six-foot-four in the late twenties or early thirties, Caucasian male…..solid built as a fire hydrant, carries himself like an athlete, or an ex-athlete” (214). Through the police report, giving the description of the protagonist, Oates foretells his surprising fate at the beginning of the story which in turn, creates tension and suspense for the reader as the protagonist goes about what
The tragic novella of Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton focuses on adultery in rural New England. Stressing the importance of relationships, the narrator tells the story of Ethan Frome, a man searching for love. Despite being married to his cousin Zeena, he only views this civil union as a moral obligation. Then, he ventures into an adulterous relationship with Mattie Silver, and begins to understand what love is really about.
