Overtime, the United States has had many unexpected situations, causing panic, chaos and unawareness of what actions to take. A well known example of this are the September 11 attacks in New York in 2001. There are several sources, including Jim Dwyer, Kevin Flynn, Joel Roberts and Kate Ascher that provide evidence in relation to having effective communication in a crisis. Although many other thoughts and theories on what serves the best purpose in a crisis, such as quantity of communication, have emerged, good communication is always crucial during an issue. An example of this can be found in 102 Minutes with Chief Joseph Pfeifer. Chief Pfeifer was one man who helped greatly in rescue operations. Because of his contribution in the rescue operations, he needed detailed, correct instructions in order to pass those messages onto those trapped. It states in the text, “Battalion 1 to Manhattan. We have a number of floors on fire. It looked like the plane was aiming toward the building. Transmit a third alarm throughout; the staging area at Vesey and West Street. As the third alarm assignment goes into that area, the second alarm report to the building,” (Dwyer and Flynn 48). This quote explains that the communication transmitted helped in several areas of the building, saving the many people trapped or stuck in those areas due to the help provided by the responders trying to help them. With these many messages, many people were located and brought to safety. In addition, in the book “The Heights; Anatomy of a Skyscraper,” by Kate Ascher, it states, “Telecommunications is not only important to residents and workers in tall buildings; it is also critical to firefighters.” (Ascher 124). With effective communication, firefighters and first responders can carry out rescue operations thoroughly and effectively, as well as helping people search for escape routes and carry out evacuations. This research can apply to several emergency situations, minor or major, as well as any terrorism attack that becomes prevalent, an example being the attacks on the United States in September of 2001.
