Romeo and Juliet deserves to still be taught in schools today because of the literary value within the play, and its immaculate portrayal of young love and old love. In Noah Berlatsky’s argument, It’s Not Childish, It’s About Childishness, he comments on elements of the script after reading it the second time, the first when he was in high school, “That is some searingly saucy banter, there. ‘Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer’ has to be one of the archest lines in all of literature. I’m with Romeo. I’d fall in love with that,” (Berlatsky).
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy play that is centered around the relationship of two teenagers. They are madly in love, but their family members prohibit them from establishing an easy relationship. Romeo, the male teenager, is the one who starts the relationship between the two. Romeo’s personality causes him to act quickly without much thought, thus moving the play along. The Nurse, who is Juliet’s caretaker, has impulsive behavior that greatly influences Juliet.
Unlike the mentors in Romeo and Juliet, good mentors “[teach] the mentee to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes”(Loretto). Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, had a shocking turn of events that were led by the decisions of the mentors. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet’s parents are in an ancient grudge with each other, so Romeo and Juliet are star-crossed lovers. Some events of fate and the tragic flaws of the characters lead to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet. While some may argue that Romeo and Juliet’s personalities are responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, it is actually the mentors’ fault because of the encouraged marriage, the complicated plan, and thoughtless consequences.

The question that we are debating is, should Romeo and Juliet be involved in the ninth grade curriculum? As I am ending my freshman year at Konawaena High School and have recently finished the study on William Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet, I do believe that Romeo and Juliet can be a part of ninth graders’ study. Although, many of my peers would disagree, believing that it was “boring” and “a total waste of their time”. I will admit that I enjoyed it, even throughout the confusing points. The book and the movie bits were unique and interesting, we were able to learn and view the story in different aspects making the topic more intriguing.
It is viewed as a perfect love story that many people reference when speaking of love. However, the truth is that the rash actions of fictional characters Romeo and Juliet are manifested in a bitter reality. Many teens today do not realize the possible outcomes of rash actions they make and how they may affect the lives of their loved ones as well as themselves. By understanding the reasoning behind their actions, it is possible to educate teenagers today about the possible consequences of such behavior. It is of the utmost importance to ensure that such tragic consequences are avoided in the future to make the world a safer and easier place to live

The issues concerning this tragic love story are the inappropriate jokes, the unrealistic view of love, and the promotion of suicide. These issues will indeed prove why Romeo and Juliet is ill suited to be taught to freshmen. Ninth graders should no longer read Romeo and Juliet because it is has very inappropriate jokes that should not be associated with school.
