Effects of Medical and Political Views on Abortion. How do medical professionals and politicians think differently about abortion? Ever since former President Trump went into office in 2016, over the years, he started to attack the rights of abortion. “I was able to kill Roe v. Wade,” Trump said. Many states on the Republican spectrum of the political scale have used popular sovereignty (people's voice) to choose if the medical profession should allow the medical process of completing an abortion or not. With abortion being banned in some states, it’s hard for medical staff to help pregnant women with any pregnancy-related problems. According to Wolters Kluwer, “medical personnel worsened their ability to manage pregnancy-related emergencies, and 40% of OB-GYNs practicing in abortion-restrictive states felt constrained in their ability to manage miscarriages and pregnancy-related medical emergencies,” according to Balch. With this, and with pregnancy emergencies, doctors struggle to be able to take care of their patients and be able to keep the women and the fetus alive. So what does this mean? In certain states, doctors can be sentenced to jail for performing an abortion. In 13 states (red), there is a jail sentence for an abortion that is performed 20-22 weeks after conception. In about 4 states (orange), there will be jail time if there is an abortion completed within 24 weeks of the third trimester. There is a civil penalty for abortions up to 6 weeks and a fine of up to $10,000 in damages in 2 states (yellow). In 5 states (green), there is no jail time if there is an abortion after 18 weeks. Florida came up with five different positions for the extent to which abortion should be allowed, or whether the federal government or the states should adjudicate the issue.
