Regarding Henry directed by Mike Nichols, is a film about a lawyer, Henry Turner, who gets shot in the head and develops a serious brain injury and becomes a new person because of it. Before the injury, Henry was a jerk and was often subsumed in his job. The id often took control of his actions. The id, in psychology, is describes as the reservoir of the instinctual and biological urges. The id also is known to operate on the “pleasure principle”, meaning if you want something, the id will urge you to do whatever you have to do to get it. In the beginning of the movie, Henry was rude to his daughter and caused a fight. His wife, Sarah, told him to go and apologize to her, but when Henry did this, he was very hesitant and did not take responsibility for being rude to …show more content…

He acted immature and blames the fight on her. Another example of the id having negative effects is in the Matthews court case. Henry withheld information and lied in court which is a prime example of the id displaying itself in a negitive manner. On the other hand, the id can also have a positive effect. After Henry's brain injury, his mind was still stuck in the adolescent phase. At one point in the movie, Henry stuck a substantial amount of cash into his pocket and went on a shopping excursion. He bought a puppy and brought him home. His daughter was very exuberant because she had been asking for a dog for a long time. Another example of the id having positive effects is when Henry was holding Sarahs hand in public. Before his surgery, Henry did not like showing any sort of affection in public; but now, after the surgery, he and Sarah went to the park and were holding hands, hugging, and kissing. This is a positive effect because it shows that Henry changed and bettered himself by expressing what he feels, compared to before the surgery, when he omitted his
