The increased usage of special effects in horror movies has led to a multitude of its characters to appear more realistic and immersive to viewers. This has led to filmmakers to use some aspects of special effects to help enhance the storytelling of horror movies to make it more immersive to viewers and keep them interested and intrigued throughout the entire movie. Consequently, this has prompted many viewers to become emotionally invested in horror movies which can have negative psychological issues on them if they are not mature enough. Special effects have helped to draw in more viewers to horror movies due to the incredible realism and improved storytelling that filmmakers have been able to include. According to an article published by Mark Griffiths, Dr. Deidre Johnson conducted a sample of 220 American adolescents, where the four primary reasons why people were motivated to watch horror movies were gore watching, thrill watching, independent watching, and problem watching and that “each of these four viewing motivations are found to be related to viewers’ cognitive and affective responses to horror movies.” With there being a variety of ways for people to enjoy horror movies, special effects have allowed for each of these four viewing motivations to be enhanced with better realism, and improved storytelling to keep all audiences interested and intrigued. According to an article published by Jody Keisner, a professor at the University of Nebraska, said: “Creators of horror movies rely on quintessential fact, and because of it, special effects have become the horror movie’s means to survival and popularity”(413). With special effects in horror movies causing viewers to act angrier in their personal life, it can also harm a person’s social life because it can lead to that person becoming a bad influence on other people which can compel them to elude that person because they do not want that negative behavior around them. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a 24 hour hotline that provides help and comfort to abusive relationships, said: “anger can cause people to feel put off, upset, intimidated, afraid, or a handful of other unpleasant emotions, [and it can run] the risk of pushing loved ones out of [that person’s] life for good.” It is very beneficial for a person to seek to repress their anger when dealing with others. Having friends and family around can greatly help a person when dealing with psychological issues and also help to avoid suffering from potential loneliness. According to Kendra Shelley, a psychological rehabilitation specialist, said that loneliness can have many negative effects such as “depression and suicide, increased stress levels, antisocial behavior, and can result in alcoholism and drug abuse.” Having a trustworthy support group of friends and family will greatly benefit a person dealing with current psychological issues and help them to avoid other psychological issues in the future.
