Although the advancement of technology has immensely improved society’s ways of problem solving, the negative effects on relationships, mental health, and the start of addictions may overpower the positive effects. Technology addiction is portrayed in Fahrenheit 451, but there are countless stories of technology, specifically video games, consuming lives. Cam Adair, a professional speaker and influencer on video game addiction, describes how technology can be a distraction to people from their deteriorating mental health. He also states the following, portraying a way that technology can impair mental and physical health: “Extreme video game addicts, Cam Adair says, may neglect to eat, sleep, or to perform work or school duties. The most common case I see is a college student, usually male, who is now beginning to fail school and can’t seem to get themselves away from games.” (Adair 15) Adair shows how the simple technology of video games can lead to an unhealthy addiction, which also leads to lack of interest in life’s necessary duties. Another way technology can negatively affect the human body is by declining mental health. The second biggest piece of technology that can poorly affect people is the cell phone. Cell phones are used by most of the world population every single day. Teenagers are commonly known to use cell phones more frequently than the remainder of the population. Suicides have become more common with the rise of technology. Cyberbullying is a substantial cause of depression and suicide. The Top Six Unforgettable Cyberbullying Cases show the dangers and outcomes of cyberbullying, specifically dealing with relationships. Jessica Logan was an 18-year-old senior who attended Sycamore High School. They state that “She had sent explicit photos of herself to her boyfriend, but the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the photo was sent by her boyfriend to hundreds of teenagers in at least seven Cincinnati-area high schools. According to the University of Alabama’s cyberbullying website, the cyber bullying continued through Facebook, MySpace and text messages.
