In 1917, two successive revolutions rocked Russia and the world. The first revolution overthrew the Russian Monarchy (the Tsar) and the second established the USSR, the world’s first Communist state. Over the next thirty years the Soviet government descended into a totalitarian regime that used and manipulated socialist ideas of equality among the working class to oppress its people and maintain power. Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and the Communist Soviet Union. Many of the animal characters in Animal Farm have direct correlations to figures or institutions in the Soviet Union. In his seemingly simple story about animals Orwell has written a book that attacks the Soviet Union for its failure to live to its revolutionary ideals at the same time that it presents a universal message about human equality and freedom. In the novel Orwell uses farm animals to portray people of power and the common people during the Russian revolution. In the novel there are three major issue such as, effects of russian revolution, totalitarianism and class distinction. Firstly, throughout Orwell 's Animal Farm a standout amongst the most noticeable topics is that of the inexorability of class and social stratification and the issues of the working class, particularly regarding their relationship to power structures and, indeed, it is not hard to break down Animal Farm from a Marxist point of view.
