Wars are never good. “War destroys communities and families and often disrupts the development of the social and economic fabric of nations”(The World Psychiatric Association). Many people die, and the ones that survive have to deal with survivors' guilt, PTSD, and sometimes even flashbacks. With over 50 different nations and 17 million deaths, WWII was the deadliest war in history. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, is a great example of this with the main character Louis Zamperini showing what it is like to be captured and put into a POW camp. He also described the destruction of war, and the PTSD one would have after the war. Just under 7 million people died in POW/concentration camps. In Germany, Hitler ordered for all Jewish people to be captured and put into concentration camps, which broke the Geneva Convention and ended up killing more than 6 million. Hitler thought that Aryans (a type of race) were superior and that he needed to expand the Aryan population. Many say this is what motivated his attack on Poland which caught more than 5 million people in crossfire. The conditions the Jews were put in were only matched by the Japanese brutality for their prisoners caught in the Pacific which ended up killing 11 of the 27 thousand people that were captured. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand sums up the experiences in one of these camps quite well. In the book, Louie Zamperini had to endure multiple different POW camps and had to live with little to no food, hard back breaking work to supply the Japanese with coal and tortured with physical and emotional damage with one of his captors in particular, The Bird. Europe was put into an economic recession, and conflict between two nuclear powers were starting to emerge. Approximately four trillion dollars worth of damage was caused, and inflation was at an all time high. There was a gold shortage, and countries needed gold to pay for imports. With gold losing its value, many currencies started to get abandoned. The only country that seemed like it could survive was the United States of America, which is partially why the USD is widely used today. After the war, the USA and Russia found themselves in increasing tension. Russia’s economic system post-war was changed by Stalin to make Russia an industrial country. Russia was still very poor, and many were leaving to the allies due to America’s Marshall Plan which gave western Europe a ton of economical help.
