Summary Chapter 3 of Freakonomics begins with a quote from John Kenneth Galbraith,who argued that ”we associate truth with convenience.” Then, the authors discuss way people exaggerate the concepts of different controversial things like sexual assault, homelessness, and even the corruption of the police department. The authors then go on to discuss factors in the wage determination and community jobs that have many open slots, but they do not pay well enough wages. Next, the chapter discusses University of Chicago student Sudhir Venkatesh, who follows the members of the Black Gangster Disciple Nation, and he gets to know a man named J.T. J.T. is a college educated “crack” dealer and he is also the gang’s head leader. The authors then describe the gang that J.T. is in charge of.
What is the meaning of Ego? In today’s world, it means “a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance”, it is to be self-centered and care for nothing else except for one's self or, in other terms, being an individualist. Today, people have been told to care for others instead of themselves, but that is not completely true. For example, Prometheus in Anthem by Ayn Rand- is not what one would consider to be a total egotistical person. Searching through different types of definitions and reasons about the definition of ego, the assumption is that egoism is not immoral or virtuous but the balance in between.
Ego is currently thought of as a cruel trait to have in a person, but is it really as demonic as people make it out to be. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand contains the character ,Prometheus, who has been debated as whether he is an egoist or not, but is he evil for it. Ego can be a complicated friend. On one side of the scale it can be a great ally or a cruel enemy. When Prometheus created the light, he didn’t make it for his fellow men he made it on his own, for himself.
