On Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 a tornado tore through the town of Smithville, Mississippi. The residents of Smithville had been going about their business. They knew of the storm, but no one really expected anything to come of it. The tornado sirens had been going on and off most of the morning, everyone started to grow quite accustom to, but still quite annoyed by, the noise that seemed as though it just would not go away. Most people may only have a faint memory of that day. They recall the news articles in the days following or that their meeting was canceled, because of bad weather that later transpired into the tornado that hit towns near them. However, I will not be able to forget as easily as some, because one of the houses the storm tore through was my grandparents '. It, as well as the houses in the rest of the neighborhood, was completely leveled by the tornado. The majority of these families did not have proper insurance for something like this. After Katrina, Steve Tybor, now president of Eight Days of Hope, decided to get a small group together, as a one-time thing, to go and help repair and rebuild homes that were damaged by the hurricane. That small group turned into a group of 684 people (Rick). Out of this, Eight Days of Hope was born. Tybor says, the eight in the name is a “biblical interpretation of the number eight, which means new beginnings”(Rick). Their mission is to serve the community where a natural disaster, such as a tornado, hurricane, or flood, has occurred and to “share the love and hope of Jesus” with the victims in need (“Eight”). Eight Days of Hope have branched a new program, Hope Reigns. Hope Reigns is a first responder outreach that enables Eight Days of Hope to reach the disaster site much faster than before, as it usually takes 4-6 months for Eight Days of Hope to arrive at the site
