The Nursing and midwifery Council (NMC 2008), published the Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAIP) in order to support learning and assessing students in practice environment, this document also set out specific outcomes for mentors, practice teaching nurses. The (SLAIP) document which was published by NMC (2008) states that every pre-register nursing student is require to undertake mentorship programme. The role of a mentor is identified as a development of supporting and encouraging individuals to achieve their own ways of learning. This learning can be achieved by the developing of skills, improving their performance and become the person they want to be (Parsloe, 2009). These domains are: establishing effective working relationships, facilitation of learning, assessment and accountability, evaluation of learning, creating an environment for learning, context of practice, evidence-based practice and leadership (NMC 2008). The aim of this essay is to explore two of the eight domains, I will be focusing on the assessment and accountability and leadership in mentorship. This assign will be done in mentoring a third year student who has been allocated in Accident and Emergency department. In this assessment the third year student will undertaking a skills of cathertering a female patient under supervision. Due to confidentiality both the patient and the student name will not be mentioned, this is also in accordance with the (Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct 2015). Accountability is very important in nursing practice, it means being responsible for your actions and the outcome of those actions. As healthcare professionals we are accountable to the care we give to our patients and clients, to whom we owe what is called duty of care. In nursing at times when caring for a patient, your actions could cause harm, if care is not carried out in a careful and competent way. Grifith and Tengnah (2013) defines responsibility as having a full control or autonomy over somebody or something, whiles Wheeler (2012) defines accountability as an obligation to provide an account for actions and omissions. Nurses and midwives who are in the role of a practice teacher or mentor are liable for their actions and therefore have a responsibility to make sure that students gain the required experience to progress their professional competence Griffith and Tengnah (2013).
