Fortunately, Irene Gut Opdyke, by traditional standards, was the most unlikely candidate as the savior of six lives. She was quite inconspicuous, female, and an Aryan by Hitler’s very definition (Opdyke 55-56). Consequently, she was treated as a respectable member of society by those who held power of her, and had no reason to suspect she was smuggling Jews right through their abodes and into safer territories. There was truly nothing that made her stand out from any other Polish Christian citizen, whether in terms of upbringing or morality, yet she fully realized the situation she was placed in. A vagabond she became through her interactions with the war, further opening her eyes to a world of which she was once willfully ignorant (Opdyke
She was the most listened to DJ during World War II, yet the legend of the Tokyo Rose is hardly remembered today. Ikuko “Iva” Toguri, later known as Iva Toguri d’Aquino was an American- Japanese propagandist during World War II. Throughout the war, Toguri broadcasted for Zero Hour under the name of “Orphan Ann”, however she was commonly referred to as “Tokyo Rose” by the American and Australia soldiers. This radio propaganda aimed to demoralize the troops serving in the Pacific, however it was also intentionally used to comfort them. After the war, Iva Toguri was returned to her homeland and convicted for treason, however she was later granted a president’s pardon and died in 2006 as an undisputed American citizen.
Alfred Münzer was born on November 23rd, 1941 in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. In the summer of 1942, when he was a year old, his father received summons for work duty, which entailed going to a camp. In response to this Alfred's family decided it would be best for the family to separate and hide, as it would give their children a chance to survive even if they were to be found. Alfred’s parents found refuge in a psychiatric hospital, his father as a patient, and his mother as a nurse, where, on December 31st, 1942, New Year’s Eve, all 250 hiding patients were arrested by the Nazis. Alfred’s sisters would follow suit after being shifted through multiple homes, and would consequently perish after being given up to the Nazis.

While listening to this, all Werner can think is to help her, “Do something. Save her!” (Doerr 286) This quote shows how just by listening to her voice and sharing a common interest in the book she is reading, Werner is able to get a feel for her innocence and feels compelled to save her and defy his orders.
