The novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is about how a young hispanic girl discovers her identity. Esperanza’s family moves to a poor, predominantly hispanic town in Chicago. As she adjusts to her new neighborhood, she learns from her neighbors and from her own experiences in this new town. In particular, her traumatizing experiences with sexual assault have impacted her. Esperanza’s identity as an independent hispanic girl is shaped by her experiences in sexual assault because it presents her with the dangers many minorities face.

Even though their aims were different they also shared some similarities which leads us to ask the question: What were the aims of Pancho villa and Emiliano Zapata in the Mexican Revolution between 1910-1923 and what were the similarities and differences they had ? The Power of Hope Gary Soto brings the impoverished, crime filled streets of the Mexican-American communities where he grew up to life by “evoking the harsh forces that often shape the life for Chicanos” (“‘Gary Soto’: Poetry Foundation” p. 1). He combines an archetypal young love poem with the concept of poverty to create the powerful poem: “Oranges” (1985). Soto also works with the notion of old age and the importance of life in his somber poem: “The Seventieth Year” (1986).
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a semi-autobiography shown through the eyes of the story’s narrator, Esperanza Cordero, an adolescent Mexican-American girl who is about thirteen and growing up in an impoverished, mostly Latino neighborhood in Chicago. The novel is a coming of age story, told over the course of about a year in a series of standalone vignettes, written in a non chronological order, that use poetic and figurative language, such as metaphors and similes, to convey its themes.

A house is not a home. A home is somewhere your heart feels content, a place where you feel safe. In fact, a wise person once said, “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.” This particular theme of home appears several times during Sandra Cisneros’ novella The House on Mango Street. Cisneros uses indirect characterization to show that the main character, Esperanza, feels discontent with her house, and feels as if it is not really her home, because deep in her heart, deep in her mind, she feels that her home is somewhere else, and she feels lost.
Esperanza and her family are always moving because they do not have much money, but they finally moved into a house on Mango Street where they “Don’t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise” (703). Although it sounded like a nice place, when a nun from her school saw where Esperanza lived, she said, “You live there?” (703). That made Esperanza feel like nothing and made her realize she needs a real house, one that is really nice. Esperanza wants to change her life and make the best of what she has.
Dubbed the Valley Intruder or Night Stalker, Ricardo Leyva Munoz Ramirez famously known as Richard Ramirez, struck fear through the bones of many during his serial killing spree in the mid-eighties. Ramirez killed at least fourteen people in his spree while raping and torturing many more. His criminal beginnings turned to violence in June of 1984 with his first known slaying of 79-year-old Jennie Vincow. Vincow was sexually assaulted, stabbed and ultimately killed in her home. Authorities had not yet caught Ramirez after this brutal homicide, therefore he was free to continue his spree on countless more helpless victims.
Home is defined and dealt with differently depending on the individual, the environment they’re in, their perspective of it all and reaction to it. With New York City being the home for many Latinas/os seeking a new life in the United States away from issues that may have risen from their home country, many communities group together through the common thread of trying to find some type of safe haven. Thus, there are prominent neighborhoods throughout the city that house these particular groups, such as Washington Heights and East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem and El Barrio, that provide a community for these Latinas/os in these situations. Over their years within these communities, many cultural pieces have come out gauging how the
“Woman Hollering Creek” is a short story that was written by a Hispanic woman named Sandra Cisneros. Her stories are written in English but also use Spanish terms throughout the story. In the short story, Cisneros writes about a Mexican woman, Cleofilas Enriqueta DeLeon Hernandez, who moves from her hometown in Mexico and marries a U.S. citizen named Juan Pedro Martinez Sanchez. The couple moves to Texas to begin a new life together. As years go by, Cleofilas gets abused by her husband and she decides to keep it a secret.
THE FATHER, THE SON, AND LA CHINGADA: THE TRINITY OF THE CONQUEST ‘Lo Mexicano’ is a phrase-turned-concept in 20th century Mexican philosophy. The term literally translates to “the Mexican,” however, it is also used to superficially describe the identity of the Mexican individual. The notion came about after the revolution; the phrase was meant to emphasize and unite Mexico as an independent people. Today, the phrase is understood as an all encompassing term for “mexicanness,” or that which makes someone a true mexican.
The House on Mango Street is set in a poor, primarily Hispanic neighborhood. Author Sandra Cisneros creates an atypical, yet easily digestible world for the reader to experience while learning about Esperanza’s childhood. The culture of her environment influences Esperanza’s development as she becomes a young woman, and contributes to the book’s driving theme of self-empowerment. Mango Street is the source of Esperanza’s growth through her childhood, and it hides sadness and longing underneath stereotypes of Hispanic people. The characters that live in the broken-down neighborhood all seem to represent pigeonholed views of Latino individuals.
Julio, on the other hand, lives in highly ethnically diverse Los Angeles as one of the immigrant children devoid of family ties. This immediate environment of family is what Bronfenbrenner calls the microsystem. Luis enjoyed a physical presence and handling of the eleven family members in their home. But for Julio, it was a negative experience when aspect of physical development as she just a mere immigrant without parents around to give her moral support. On a worldwide perspective, both Julio and Luis desire a better world beyond theirs.
Frequently, we just pass by people and look down on them since they have no home; but who is to say they don’t have a home? Home is not the house you live in or the country you belong to. It is a place that incites certain feelings and those feeling are what makes a place home. The people on the streets with no “home” may simply find that anywhere in the world is where they call home. Home has two specific set of values that make it more than just a place which are privacy, and safety.
Home is My Life Burden Home. An alternative life kept from the outside world. Behind closed doors, it can be filled with tension but others may see happiness. Life outside my home is my escape from the anxiety that’s built from within the walls of what is called my home. But now, it’s not fully a family with just me and my mother.
