This essay is about the book Eleanor and Park and the book was written by Rainbow Rowell. This book is about two teens, Eleanor and Park, that are perceived on the outside as being very different but are extremely similar on the inside. The setting of the story is Omaha, Nebraska in the 1980s. Eleanor and Park are the two main characters and the story is about their love story, their struggles to be together and still trying to get through their teenage life. The theme of the story is figuring out your identity and validation. The author shows this through the characters, Eleanor and Park. Eleanor is getting bullied at school and she is being abused at home because of her appearance and her step-father. Park shows this by never feeling accepted with his friends or family. The Walkman and music are a symbol for the first thing that Eleanor and Park connect over. The stick shift is a symbol for masculinity and Park doesn’t feel like he needs to learn how to do. This represents the fact that he is not the traditional masculine identity. Driving is a symbol for adulthood. When Park takes Eleanor to her uncles he must take the car so that he can show grown-up strength so her can take her. The school bus is a symbol for safety. When Eleanor finishes the day, she seeks safety with Park because that is where she feels the safest. On the bus, there is little to no bullying and she is not being abused or have the fear of being abused. The last symbol is the comic books. They are the first connection of Eleanor and Park. This book has themes that are similar to Romeo and Juliet. There love was doomed by external forces, that unwilling drove them apart. They were almost fated to fall in love but not end
