This report is about Eleanor of Aquitaine and her legacy during the Middle Ages. It will be evident throughout this report that Eleanor played a very important role in Medieval Europe. Eleanor of Aquitaine was a well- educated young woman who was born in what is now known as Southern France in between 1122 and 1124.She led an active life as a horsewoman, until she inherited her father’s title and extensive lands when her father William X, Duke of Aquitaine died. At which time she became Duchess of Aquitaine at age fifteen. Eleanor was then put under the guardianship of the King of France and was then betrothed to his son and heir, Louis. The king sent an escort of 500 men to tell Eleanor the news and take her to her new home. They were married in 1137. Eleanor began her achievements at a very young age. When she was only fifteen, she was married to the king of France’s son, Louis, and later they were both crowned king and queen of France. Many years later, when a crusade didn’t go to plan, Eleanor left Louis and soon after married Henry, Duke of Normandy. When Henry’s father died, Henry and Eleanor were crowned king and queen of England. Years passed, and Eleanor left Henry to start a new life on her own. Not long after, Eleanor was rumoured to supporting her oldest son Richard’s plot to steal his father’s throne and she was imprisoned for treason. After sixteen years of living in prison, Eleanor was released by Henry. She then returned to some of her duties as queen, and when she had finally been given full freedom from Richard when Henry died, Eleanor eventually retired as a nun at the frontevraud abbey, where she was buried when she died in 1204. Therefore, Eleanor lived a life that people will remember as she was royalty, a prisoner and a nun throughout her
