Eleanor Roosevelt Rawan Alzayyat Mount Pleasant High School Advanced Placement United States History Mr. Beckman May 29, 2024 Eleanor Roosevelt was a very important social and political figure in American history. Known mostly for her role as the First Lady of the United States from 1933-1945 (when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president), Eleanor was also an activist, political figure, and contributed greatly in White House decisions and issues. She dedicated her life to civil rights, human rights, and humanitarian achievements. This research paper looks at the early life of Eleanor Roosevelt and her role as First Lady, as well as focusing on her advocacy for justice and human rights, her work with the United Nations, and her significant contributions and achievements. Kennedy asked Eleanor Roosevelt, who took the Kennedy administration to task for its lack of women in federal appointments, to chair his Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. Eleanor was able to secure the appointment of Pauli Murray, a seasoned activist in the movements for both women’s and African-American rights, to draft the report.” This is another example of Eleanor Roosevelt’s commitment to women’s rights.
