In the year 2000, early in the year before the election, the United States was thriving in every aspect of government. Its economy purring, its world leadership role unchallenged, and its two-century-old democratic experiment still vigorous. Incidence of crime, welfare dependency, and joblessness were down, and the stock market was soaring. The two candidates that survived the primary election and were up for the challenge of keeping the United States running this way was Republican nominee George W. Bush from Texas and the Democratic nominee was Al Gore from Tennessee. But, what these two candidates didn’t realize, is what was going to happen by the end of the 2000 year. Prices of shares in companies were reaching new levels, especially in technology and internet. But, during the year 2000, the economy was declining in economic activity. The recession affected the European Union during 2000 and 2001 and the United States in 2002 and 2003. Not only was the economy fluctuating a lot, but the United States was involved with a lot of out of country activity. For example, Sierra Leone was a U.S. Navy patrol craft deployed to Sierra Leone to support evacuation operations. Also, in Yemen, after the USS Cole attack in the port of Aden, Yemen, military personnel were deployed to Aden. Another out of country event happening was East Timor. This was a small number of U.S. military personnel were deployed. All of these events had an influence on what the parties’ platforms and planks were and what the nominees ideology would be while they tried to convince the people of America to vote for
