Electric Cars Are Shocking the Nation In the early 1800s, the first working electric car was created by Scottish inventor, Robert Anderson. (“Timeline”). Although the car was invented much earlier, these electric vehicles are the way of the future, some still refuse to move an inch from the gasoline-powered past. Switching from gasoline to electric battery powered cars will prove efficient, will reduce our dependence on petroleum, and will reduce the pollution caused by combustion engines. There are some who believe that electric cars are not efficient enough to be driven full-time. However, electric vehicles can go a large distance before they need to be recharged. “... 60-70 miles without recharging…” (“Barry”). Likewise, electric vehicles have top speeds that are faster than any gasoline powered engine could ever have …show more content…
But in reality, the human and monetary cost of foreign petroleum and oil is astounding. “... foreign oil… accounts for more than 80 percent of the U.S. government's total energy consumption.” (“Pew Environment Group”). Since eighty percent of government’s energy is being put towards foreign oil, than that means that there’s much less energy being put towards protecting our country. Therefore, if no one has to go to the Middle East for oil, than America’s national security will increase. “If the United States committed to deploying 10 million charging stations and making 25 percent of new vehicles electric by 2020, it would yield benefits that could help strengthen economic, national and environmental security far into the 21st century.” (“Pew Environment Group”). Thus, decreasing our demand in the first place, will give us the ability to meet it with what we already have access to. “... as battery technology develops and the electric car fuel infrastructure expands, America can meet its demand for fuel with its own supply.”
