• What would you include in your classroom?
If money were no object and I could do anything I want, I would first take half the computer desk out my classroom and replace them with bean bags. This is the first thing I would do to foster a literacy-rich classroom because I feel students learn better when their comfortable. The hard computer chair the students have is not comfortable. The reading The Elements of A Literacy-Rich Classroom Environment list Area to Read and Write as one of the top 10 characteristics of a Literacy-Rick Classroom Environment. The reading states that an Area to read and write need to be a comfy area.
• How would you arrange or organize your classroom?
I would arrange my classroom where text and other reading material will be accessible to students at all times. I would have book shelfs in all four corners of my classroom. Six Literacy Experiences Children Should Have Every Day states that every child reads something that he or she chooses. I could share my thought in our faculty meeting. Creating a literacy-rich classroom forum online where other teachers could see and understand what a literacy-rich classroom looks like. I would even share the reading such as the one by Vicki Urquhart and Dana Frazee that explained the characteristics of literacy rich content area classroom. The reading also talked about how in literacy rich classrooms students actively develop concepts with their teacher and students make connections to real-life applications. Sharing all this knowledge in an online teacher forum would probably be the best way to reach lots of teachers but talking with fellow teacher in a staff meeting will be the best way to share ideas with teachers in my
